A new paradigm has emerged, in which the band structure concepts of solid state physics are applied to Electromagnetics. This has led to a profusion of scientific creativity as new forms of electromagnetic crystal structures are invented for radio and microwaves as well as for optical wavelengths. These new structures are inspired by the 3-d geometry of both natural crystals, and those artificial crystals which can arise only in the human imagination.
These artificial electromagnetic crystals (also known as photonic crystals), are impacting the diverse domains of electromagnetics, extending from radio waves to optical wavelengths. They are bringing together under a common umbrella scientists in the fields of Solid State Band theory, semiconductor device Physics, Quantum Optics, Classical Electromagnetics, Nano-structures, and Materials Science.
This will be an international Workshop with substantial participation from Europe, America, and Asia. We will be defining the direction of the field for the next few years, taking particular note of the progress in the concept of metallic components within the periodic structures. The Workshop will be dedicated to a comprehensive international review of progress in all aspects of this field including both optical and microwave photonic crystal concepts.
Currently in the electromagnetic or photonic crystal structure field, hundreds of scientific articles are being published per year and the growth rate is still exponential. A bibliography is available on the web:

New scientific developments are likely to augment the
applications opportunities for electromagnetic crystal structures, broadening
them compared to the early pioneering days of photonic crystal research, as
exemplified by the first U.S. conference on this subject held 6 years ago:
"Workshop on the Development and Applications of Photonic
Band Gap Structures" in Park City Utah, Jan. 28-30, 1992, organized by Henry
Everitt, C. M. Bowden, and Jon Dowling.

There will be a poster session at the Workshop. Please mail titles of your poster presentations to janield@ea.ucla.edu by Dec. 11, 1998. One(1) 30"X40" black foam poster board per presentation will be provided. The posters can be ONLY displayed vertically.
Oral Snapshots of Posters
You will be allowed to show one(1)
view-graph which is most representative of your poster to perk the interst of
the audience. You will be allowed one(1) minute to briefly talk about your
view-graph. Time limit will be very strict. Please bring your view graph to the
Workshop.
Poster Presentation
The Workshop will provide one(1) black
foam-core poster per presentation. The dimensions are 30 inches width by
40 inches length (height). The posters will only be displayed VERTICALLY.
We will provide you with glue sticks, thumbtacks, scotch tape, etc. We cannot
accommodate bigger poster sizes. Thank you.
Registration
Pre-Registration Deadline: December 8, 1998
Registration includes attendance at the technical sessions, coffee breaks, lunches, the Welcome Reception and the Banquet. The number of attendees at this Workshop is strictly limited. Registration will be on a first come/first served basis. Please pre-register early to assure a space.
Registration fees are as follows:
Prior to December 8, 1998: $365.00
After December 8, 1998: $405.00
To pre-register, complete and return the enclosed Registration Form. You can also pre-register by email simply by downloading and returning this registration text file (ASCII format) as an attachment to an email or by cutting and pasting the information into an email.
Registration cancellation and requests for refunds must be in writing and received no later than December 18, 1998. There will be a $25.00 processing charge. No refunds will be issued after December 18, 1998.

Transportation and Travel Arrangements
Transportation to Surf & Sand Hotel:
The WECS organizers will provide a scheduled shuttle service on Tuesday January 5, in the afternoon from John Wayne Airport in Orange County and from Los Angeles International Airport (LAX). However, we highly recommend you arrive via John Wayne Airport as an alternative to Los Angeles International Airport . You will find that the distance from Los Angeles International Airport to the hotel is much greater than the distance from John Wayne Airport to the hotel.

There are two terminals at the John Wayne Airport, terminal A & B. There is only one shuttle loading area on the west side of terminal B. A WECS shuttle coordinator will greet you and direct you onto the correct shuttle once you arrive at the loading zone.
From Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) on Tuesday, 1/5/98: $20

for these shuttles. Reservations may be made via the registration

All arriving passenger (unless arriving at United Airlines terminal 7) should claim luggage & proceed across traffic lanes to the center traffic island directly under a large black and white "LAX shuttle" sign. Please board and ride to Terminal 7, the United Airlines terminal. Nearby, please look for a blue and white "Van Stop" sign where you will be greeted by a WECS shuttle coordinator. The coordinator will board you on the shuttle directed to the Surf & Sand Hotel.
If your arrival time is different than that of the WECS scheduled shuttle service, arranging your own transportation is simple, though more costly. Many of the airport curbside transportation coordinators can assist you once you arrive at the airport. The average one way shuttle rate is $35 from the John Wayne Airport ($5 each addtional members) and $59 from Los Angeles International Airport ($9 each additional members). A cab from the Los Angeles International Airport area can average around $110 and is not recommended.
