Professor Zee Upton
Program Leader, Tissue Bioregeneration and Integration,
QUT
Convenor

Professor Zee Upton is a biochemist, an inventor, a tissue engineer and a dedicated developer of new intellectual property opportunities.

Combining her expertise in growth factor protein and molecular and cellular technologies she discovered a new way to stimulate cell growth. Zee is leader of the Tissue Regeneration and Repair Domain in the QUT Science Research Centre and the QUT Institute of Health and Biomedical Innovation.  QUT's Tissue Repair and Regeneration Initiative brings together a multidisciplinary consortium of collaborators investigating disorders of the musculo-skeletal system, together with disorders of the skin and wound repair process. The consortium represents a unique integration of research excellence across the engineering, scientific and clinical disciplines. It is underpinned by existing and potential novel intellectual property opportunities that have clear commercial impact.

Major Outcomes are focussed on:

  • Accelerated healing and reduced scarring of wounds using novel bioactive materials
  • Development of cell culture methodologies to facilitate autologous tissue engineering for clinical application
  • Novel load/force-bearing and bioactive tissue substitutes and scaffolds
  • New non-invasive diagnostic and monitoring technologies for bone wear and internal wound repair.

Convenor

Research

We are interested in understanding the role of proteins in disease and developing novel compounds to modify the functions of disease-causing proteins. We use protein crystallography as the major biophysical approach to investigate protein structure and function, protein interactions, and as the foundation for inhibitor design.

A world class protein crystallography facility has been linked to a high throughput protein expression facility for protein structure determination. Together these facilities can be used to examine proteins of prime importance to human health. This research will underpin the future development of new medicines.

Research Projects

  • Discovery and validation of new drug targets for chronic inflammatory disease
  • Novel antibacterial and anti-virulence agents
  • Protein folding and diseaseDevelopment of adrenaline synthesis inhibitors
  • Development of platform technologies for:
    • Drug discovery using X-ray crystallography
    • High throughput crystallography

Professor Keith Stanley,
UNSW, St Vincents Hospital and Corbett Research Laboratories
Co-convenor
Professor Keith Stanley was awarded his PhD from Cambridge University. He was a Group Leader at EMBL, Heidleberg, in the leading Cell Biology Research program in Europe. During this time techniques for cloning molecules of importance in cell biology were established allowing them to be studied on the molecular level for the first time. In Australia, Prof Stanley worked on lipoprotein receptors, in the field of atherosclerosis, leading to the realisation that cholesterol could be playing an important role in cellular signaling. Research has also been focussed on endothelial cell biology and vascular inflammation.  Most recently Prof Stanley has taken the position of Director of Research at Corbett Research Pty Ltd.

Keith's research interests focus on personalised medical treatment for cancer sufferers in Australia and internationally.
